Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed why it was easy for Lionel Messi to score him twice through his legs during Chelsea Wednesday’s defeat at Camp Nou.
The Belgian number one admitted that he was responsible for the Messi two goals in their Champions League second leg and was left to rue his mistakes which has cost the Blues a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
“The first, I didn’t expect a shoot from Messi there and I was too late to close my legs so obviously it’s a mistake on my part,” the Belgian international told BT Sport after the game. “Not nice to start an evening like that and then I think two other missed passes.
“They scored from our mistakes. Besides that we defended well, we tried to play well. Mostly it was our individual mistakes that cost us and we have to be honest about that and continue working and try to win on Sunday in the FA Cup because that’s the only silverware we can win this season, so we have to win.
“Obviously I’ve played against him a lot of times and i’ve already conceded goals through my legs with him. For a goalkeeper like me from two metres I think that’s maybe the weakest point between my legs because even if I’m standing in position there’s a lot of space in between.
“It’s annoying but I don’t think I have to hide inside. I have to come out and be a man and show I made a mistake and move on. I think I made some good saves as well. It’s unlucky we went out with four goals from four mistakes.”Thibaut Courtois said.
